For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to do my part to make the world better. I was never afraid to speak up about the injustices I cared about and never hesitated to ask the tough questions. But speaking up wasn’t always easy and it often got me in trouble.
Call me feisty, but I genuinely wanted to know why the world works the way it does. Why do some people live peaceful lives of prosperity while other people are ravaged by war and live in poverty? Why is there so much violence in the world and why do so many children have to suffer? Why are people judged so harshly for loving someone outside of their race? Isn’t love, love?
I was a pretty curious kid, but I was passionate about a lot of other things too. I loved spending time outdoors exploring, being social with my friends, rooting for my favorite sports team-or pretty much anyone who held a dream. I was competitive, creative and I absolutely loved to learn. When things got hard at home, school was my haven.
After being the first in my family to graduate high school and the first to attend college, it’s no surprise I chose teaching as my first career path. Teaching taught me a lot and served me (and my students) well for many years, but the one thing it taught me the most is that the way we measure success in this country is incredibly flawed.
I’ve never been much of a conformer so I’ll just come out and say it. I loved teaching but our educational system is broken. If education was treated as an investment in our country with an equal distribution of resources and a focus on supporting the whole child instead of training students to pass a test, perhaps we could finally decrease the achievement gap and change the future of socioeconomic inequality.
As a society, we need to speak up more and make it our responsibility to fix broken systems that exclude people. We have the power to change the way the world operates and it starts at our own front door.
After realizing it was time to make a different kind of impact, I gave up the security of my assistant principal salary and was soon on the path to entrepreneurship. I wasn’t sure what that path would look like but I knew a few things. I knew I needed to do work that mattered to me. I knew I had the power to create positive change and I knew I wanted to work with people who were on a mission to do the same.
I believe every one of us has the chance to use our influence for the greater good each and every day. The question becomes, how will we use that opportunity?
